An urban planner is an individual who works for city, state, county, federal or even regional governments to help assist over a wide range of different responsibilities.  These individuals may work for construction or architecture firms, other will work on their own and be consultants to a wide variety of individuals, cities, governments and so on. Other urban planners will work as teachers or independent researchers.  Urban planners can choose to specialize in a number of different areas that will affect the way a city, town or community is run.  These individuals will help in the community development as well as the communities re-development. Urban planners will come up with a design and layout of how a community should look and run, they will work in metropolitan as well as rural areas, they can be found working in industrial development, land use or even code enforcements.  There are a lot of aspects to the job of those involved in urban planning. In this article I will discuss an urban planners salary along with a job descriptions and other responsibilities and requirements that come along with a career in urban planning.

Job Description  

One of the biggest responsibilities of urban planners is to help to study, design and plan ways to help revitalize poor and underdeveloped areas. Typically an urban planner will come in and they will survey an area and they will begin to draw up plans to help these underdeveloped areas to expand and renovate.  A lot of urban planners will spend their time focusing on schools, parks, recreation areas, public transportation, highways and much more. These individuals will conduct studies, gather and analyze data on the land usage. Urban planners will also meet with public officials, lawyers, land developers, community members, businesses and many others. Urban planners will spend a lot of their time trying to gather public opinion of how they feel about their residence, what they would like to see, what they would not like to see and so on.  An urban planner will take all of the information and data that they have gathered and they will analyze it, they will draw up reports, proposals, plans and evidence that backs up what they what to do. Once all of an urban planners information has been gathered, all the figures have been analyzed and reported and they have their plans done along with their proposal, they will present this to planning commissions, government agencies and other developers.  An urban planners job is definitely one where there is a lot of foot worked involved, a lot of time spent trying to get a project done and an exponential amount of red tape to cut through. 


An urban planner will have an extremely hectic work schedule, especially during the initial steps of the planning. It is typical for an urban planner to do a lot of travel, to their sites, other states, cities and governments. They will also find that they will spend a lot of time out in the field as well as inside in an office. Typically an urban planner will find that they work around forty hours a week, with very sporadic hours, with both evenings as well as weekends.  An urban planner can be found both indoors as well as outdoors. It is important for an urban planner to have excellent communication skills as well as written skills since they will spend a lot of time talking and discussing plans with all types of people. It is also important for an urban planner to be passionate about what he or she wants to do and about helping communities and people to have a better place to live as well as a better way of life.  An urban planner must be focused, a great multitasker, thorough, have a keen eye for detail and understand the psychology behind what a persons environment can do to help or hinder an individual.

It is important to understand that urban planning is a hard field to fight through. Urban planners will find themselves mediating community disputes, speaking before civil meetings, town hall meetings, appearing before legislative committees to speak out for or against plans. They will have to defend their proposals on all levels.  Urban planners must be ready to face political heat, deal with interest groups, developers and even environmental groups as well. An urban planner will have to deal with many hurdles and ups and downs when it comes to trying to get a project started and finished properly. As an urban planner you can easily face budget cuts, criticisms, rigid deadlines, demanding work and schedules among much more.   It is typically for an individual first starting out in urban planning to begin working for a small firm, working on a much smaller scale and working your way up to ladder and to bigger projects with the more experience and time you have spent in business.

An urban planner works very hard for their salary. The typical urban planner salary is roughly around sixty three to over a hundred thousand a year. An urban planner salary depends on their location, experience as well as their success.  Another thing that influences an urban planner salary is the degree that he or she holds. Urban planners who hold a masters degree and or any other specialized certification will find that their salary and desirability will increase immensely.  It is more likely for an urban planner with a graduate degree or specialized certificate to get a job before individuals with only a bachelors degree.
